As current trends indicate, the amount of waste materials from production processes and from general consumption is rapidly increasing everywhere. Such wastes include solid, liquid, and gaseous elements representing all industrial sectors as well as different waste types of any kind. On the one hand there is an increasing shortage of certain raw materials, and on the other hand the ever-present danger associated with handling various hazardous wastes. Therefore, one can assume with great certainty that more sophisticated and more effective utilization of wastes will define the future orientation of material and energy management [1].

Readiness of Polish Industrial Enterprises for the Industry 4.0 Revolution

Implementing solutions related to Industry 4.0 is a challenge for Polish industrial enterprises, regardless of size or affiliation to a larger, international organisation. The aim of this article is to examine the awareness, readiness and ability of these enterprises to meet this challenge. This study was conducted on a group of 60 randomly selected representatives of companies operating in Poland. A structured interview consisting of 32 questions, carried out using the English computer-assisted web interview (CAWI) method, was used to collect the data. Statistical differences between companies employing up to 249 people and companies employing at least 250 people were verified by the use of the nonparametric Mann–Whitney U test. Latent variables were also extracted, and the comparison was conducted using the independent samples from a Student’s t-test. Regardless of the differences in responses between companies employing up to 249 employees and those employing 250 or more, the results showed an insufficient level of knowledge of technological solutions as well as a lack of awareness about supporting business development by means of specialised technology providers. Even though little awareness of the importance of Industry 4.0 solutions was identified, identifying key determinants for raising awareness of these solutions among companies operating in Poland may become not only the basis of further scientific research but also of a vital catalogue of activities that can be used to disseminate knowledge in this area. Both paths are extremely important for Polish enterprises. Practical implementation of Industry 4.0 measures particularly entails additional support for small and medium-sized enterprises (hereinafter SME) investment in technological, financial and human resources.

Trajectory Optimization of Industrial Robot Arms Using a Newly Elaborated “Whip-Lashing” Method

The application of the Industry 4.0′s elements—e.g., industrial robots—has a key role in the efficiency improvement of manufacturing companies. In order to reduce cycle times and increase productivity, the trajectory optimization of robot arms is essential. The purpose of the study is the elaboration of a new “whip-lashing” method, which, based on the motion of a robot arm, is similar to the motion of a whip. It results in achieving the optimized trajectory of the robot arms in order to increase velocity of the robot arm’s parts, thereby minimizing motion cycle times and to utilize the torque of the joints more effectively. The efficiency of the method was confirmed by a case study, which is relating to the trajectory planning of a five-degree-of-freedom RV-2AJ manipulator arm using SolidWorks and MATLAB software applications. The robot was modelled and two trajectories were created: the original path and path investigate the effects of using the whip-lashing induced robot motion. The application of the method’s algorithm resulted in a cycle time saving of 33% compared to the original path of RV-2AJ robot arm. The main added value of the study is the elaboration and implementation of the newly elaborated “whip-lashing” method which results in minimization of torque consumed; furthermore, there was a reduction of cycle times of manipulator arms’ motion, thus increasing the productivity significantly. The efficiency of the new “whip-lashing” method was confirmed by a simulation case study.
