Simulation of a Large-Scale FCC Riser Using a Combination of MP-PIC and Four-Lump Oil-Cracking Kinetic Models

Abstract: Fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC) is the most used process for converting heavy oil into more valuable fuels and chemical products such as gasoline and propylene. A three-dimensional reactive gas–particle CFD model was built to study the hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and cracking reaction behaviors within an industrial FCC riser reactor. The multiphase particle-in-cell methodology (MP-PIC) was used to simulate the riser hydrodynamics. A four-lump kinetic model was selected to represent the cracking reaction n… Show more

“…The MP-PIC method was implemented to the simulations of multiphase and thermal reacting flows in fluidized bed (Li et al, 2013;Berrouk et al, 2017;Xie et al, 2017). This approach has been utilized in several cold flow modeling studies including bubbling fluidized beds (Weber et al, 2013;Liang et al 2014;Fotovat et al, 2015), risers of CFB's (Chen et al, 2013;Shi et al, 2014;Shi et al, 2015a;Shi et al, 2015b;Wang et al, 2015) and full loop CFB systems (Wang et al, 2014;Tu and Wang, 2018).…”

“…In mathematics, only when r ( c c ) is a linear function of c c , the value of ∫ p ( c c ) r ( c c ) dc c equals r()ccfalse¯. However, in real commercial processes, including FCC and MTO, the relation between r ( c c ) and c c is highly nonlinear. Hence, the coke distribution becomes important for correctly describing the reaction behavior of a population of catalyst particles in fluidized bed reactor–regenerator system.…”

“…The increased computational efficiency makes it suitable for large‐scale FRB simulations. The MP‐PIC approach has been recently applied to the simulation of large‐scale fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC), biomass‐sand fluidized bed, biomass‐steam gasification, etc. Therefore, the MP‐PIC methodology is suitable for the simulation of industrial processes due to the enhanced computational efficiency.…”
