Simulation of Ion Motion at Atmospheric Pressure: Particle Tracing Versus Electrokinetic Flow

Abstract: Results obtained with two computational approaches for the simulation of ion motion at elevated pressure are compared with experimentally derived ion current data. The computational approaches used are charged particle tracings with the software package SIMION ver. 8 and finite element based calculations using the software package Comsol Multiphysics ver. 4.0/4.0a. The experimental setup consisted of a tubular corona discharge ion source coupled to a cylindrical measurement chamber held at atmospheric pressure… Show more

“…Two collision models are included with SIMION: a hard-sphere model (HS1) for low pressures and a statistical diffusion algorithm (SDS) 181,182 for pressures closer to ambient conditions (HS1 is computationally inefficient at ambient pressure). 183 As a simulation tool, SIMION can consume a significant amount of memory and can require substantial computational power for large and/or high-density systems or systems for which important dimensions span many orders of magnitude ( e.g.…”

“…Only some specific aspects such as special inlet geometries in [8] or the coupling of the emerging jet to ion optics in [12] were successfully investigated and showed improvements of the transmission rate. Other works focus on specific aspects of the problem [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Specifically, Ref.…”

“…Very recently, Wissdorf et al [13] have shown that CFD simulation results of simple flow patterns at essentially laminar conditions yield accurate, experimentally verified Figure 6. Horseshoe-shaped vortex in front of the spray shield ion trajectory calculation results using single particle tracings with the SIMION program package and the statistical diffusion simulation module installed along with appropriate custom software.…”

“…Even further, with proper input parameters, i.e., bulk gas velocity vector fields, even simulations within viscous flow became feasible. Very recently, we have investigated the validity of the SDS approach [13]. It was shown that SIMION with SDS and proper fluid dynamical input data reliably models experimental results obtained in a rather simple set-up.…”
