Abstract:This paper investigates the variational finite element formulation and its numerical implementation of the damage evolution in solids, using a new discrete embedded discontinuity approach. For this purpose, the kinematically optimal symmetric (KOS) formulation, which guarantees kinematics, is consistently derived.
