Simulation training in transurethral resection/laser vaporization of the prostate; evidence from a systematic review by the European Section of Uro-Technology

Abstract: Purpose Transurethral resection (TURP) and photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) constitute established surgical options to treat benign prostate hyperplasia. We investigated the current literature for simulators that could be used as a tool for teaching urologists alone or within the boundaries of a course or a curriculum. Methods A literature search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials-CENTRAL. Search terms included: Simulat*, train*, curr… Show more

“…The European Section of Uro-Technology (ESUT) undertook a systematic review [ 12 ▪▪ ] examining simulation training in transurethral resection and laser vaporisation procedures of the prostate. The review findings pointed towards VR simulators uniquely possessing data capture and performance evaluation features but that alongside their typically poor haptic feedback, their simulation of bleeding is generally poor for TURP and laser vaporisation.…”

“…The major benefit of such webinars is the availability of high-level content to anyone with internet access [11]. But now that this technology has been successfully implemented, it is time to incorporate new elements in the online learning structure and training of the EAU [12,13,14], such as mobile apps, podcasts, virtual and augmented reality [15], 3D printing [16], remote live surgery [17] big data and artificial intelligence [18] among others.…”
