The boost feature that characterizes Z-source and quasi-Z-source converters is usually achieved by means of a proper insertion of short-circuit states in the full DC-link. In this work, a novel pulse width modulation carrier-based strategy for a three-phase, three-level T-type, quasi-Z-source inverter is introduced, based on the addition of alternate short-circuits in the two halves of the DC-link bus. This technique achieves better performance, less electromagnetic interference, and lower harmonic distortion of the output line-to-line voltage compared to the traditional methods based on the full DC-link shoot-through. At the same time, generating the switching states is to easy implement. The proposed strategy permits the use of electronic devices with lower blocking voltage capability, thus improving converter reliability, size, and cost. The new method may be implemented in another multilevel inverter with an impedance-source network as well. A comprehensive simulation study is performed in order to validate the adopted method, with different inverter input voltages, which is taken as representative of a photovoltaic array. Comparisons are conducted with conventional strategy insertions using the same topology in order to show the improvements achieved.

The neutral point clamped quasi-Z-source (NPC-qZS) inverter is poised to become a potential candidate for renewable energy applications because it yields a continuous input current and voltage boost. In this study, the closed-loop control of grid-tied three-phase (3-ϕ) NPC-qZS inverter, fed with renewable energy sources, is proposed for the first time. A dynamic model has been developed to accurately design the control strategy. The proposed strategy includes the control of grid-tied current and the peak dc-link voltage (PDV). The control of grid-tied current is achieved through a damped-secondorder-generalised integrator. The PDV is estimated indirectly from the voltages of qZS network capacitors and is regulated by an integral-double-lead controller. Two modified modulation techniques based on phase-opposite disposition and in-phase disposition are proposed to yield shoot through by injecting 3rd harmonics for maximum constant boost control. A comparison is drawn between the performance of the proposed controller and sliding-mode controller on the dc side. The controller design and system performance are validated through real-time simulation and experimentation on a practical setup in the laboratory.

Bipolar hybrid ac/dc microgrid (MG) controls a DC and AC bus at the same time, supplies local loads with local resources, and offers multiple levels of dc voltages to resources and services. The applications are getting more popular in power systems. Due to its vital tasks in numerous applications, the interlinking converter (ILC) is an utmost crucial portion of the MG system. From this study, a 10‐switch converter is provided as an ILC for a hybrid MG, which gains from both two‐level (2L) and three‐level (3L) converters at the same time, and it can be used to a wider range of power levels. This work provides a space vector modulation (SVM) for a 10‐switch converter to maximize dc‐link voltage consumption and minimize total harmonic distortion (THD) compared with other modulation techniques. The behaviour of the suggested SVM is compared with that of sinusoidal PWM. The suggested SVM was evaluated using OPAL‐RT to show that it used DC bus voltage more reliably and produced significantly less THD than existing techniques. Furthermore, grid‐tied ILC's architecture is improved to reduce low‐order harmonics and used for dc‐link voltage balancing. A real‐time (RT) digital simulator (OP‐5700) was used to test the inverter control technique. In MG, this hardware‐in‐the‐loop simulation provides an excellent environment for designing and verifying system‐level control algorithms. Simulations were run in a MATLAB/Simulink environment and confirmed using an RT simulator to validate the feasibility of the suggested topology.
