Marine resources exist in vast numbers and show enormous diversity. As a result, there are likely many possible applications for marine molecules of interest in the cosmetic industry, whether as excipients or additives, but especially as active substances. It is possible to obtain extracts from active substances; for example, quite a few algae species can be used in moisturizing or anti-ageing products. In the field of topical photoprotection, mycosporine-like amino acids and gadusol are important lines of enquiry that should not be overlooked. In the field of additives, the demonstration that certain seaweed (algae) extracts have antimicrobial properties suggests that they could provide alternatives to currently authorized preservatives. These promising leads must be explored, but it should be kept in mind that it is a long process to bring ingredients to market that are both effective and safe to use.

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) has attracted lots of attention due to its simplicity, low sample consumption, low solvent volume, high resolution, and high speed. Based on these advantages, it has been widely used in enzyme inhibitor screening. There are two main operation modes on enzyme inhibitor screening: off‐line (precapillary enzyme assays) in which process CE was used as an analytical tool; online (in‐capillary enzyme assays) which combined the sample injection, mix, reaction, separation, and detection within a single run. Additionally, diverse of new materials were introduced to immobilize enzyme, which has been coupled with CE for the study of enzyme activity and its inhibitor screening. This review gives an overview of the developments and applications for the CE‐based enzyme inhibitor screening.

Capillary electrophoresis using laser-induced fluorescence detection (CE-LIF) is one of the most sensitive separation tools among electrical separation methods. The use of CE-LIF in immunoassays and enzyme assays has gained a reputation in recent years for its high detection sensitivity, short analysis time, and accurate quantification. Immunoassays are bioassay platforms that rely on binding reactions between an antigen (analyte) and a specific antibody. Enzyme assays measure enzymatic activity through quantitative analysis of substrates and products by the reaction of enzymes in purified enzyme or cell systems. These two category analyses play an important role in the context of biopharmaceutical analysis, clinical therapy, drug discovery, and diagnosis analysis. This review discusses the expanding portfolio of immune and enzyme assays using CE-LIF and focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of these methods over the ten years of existing technology since 2008.
