Simultaneous generation of independent wired and 60-GHz wireless signals in an integrated WDM-PON-RoF system based on frequency-sextupling and OCS-DPSK modulation

Abstract: We propose a simple and cost-effective scheme to integrate a wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (WDM-PON) with a 60-GHz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system. In optical line terminal/central station (OLT/CS), 10-GHz electronic devices and single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) are used to generate 60-GHz wireless signals based on frequency-sextupling and optical carrier suppression-differential phase shift keying (OCS-DPSK) modulation. By designing a new architecture, only N + 1 single-drive… Show more

“…Next-generation (NG) access networks require large bandwidth and high data rates to be provided in quadruple-play manner for the ever-increasing video-based interactive and multimedia services demands [1]. Therefore, mobility and high bandwidth are two requirements for NG access networks in order to be able to offer new applications and develop real broadband.…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6] On the other hand, the wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (WDM-PON) has been widely investigated for its large data bandwidth, enhanced security, and scalability to support several local subscribers in wired access networks. 3,[9][10][11][12][13] But we find that some of them are designed only for the downstream link without upstream link in an ROF system, and some of them focus on different ways of modulation. Lots of WDM-ROF-PON have been reported.…”

“…Next-generation access networks require large bandwidths and high data rates in both wired and wireless accesses for the ever-increasing video-based interactive and multimedia services [1], [2]. It is highly beneficial to simultaneously transmit baseband (BB) and wireless signals using the same infrastructure such as passive optical network (PON).…”
