In recent years, research has focused on developing materials exhibiting outstanding mechanical, electrical, thermal, catalytic, magnetic and optical properties such as graphene/polymer, graphene/metal nanoparticles and graphene/ceramic nanocomposites. Two-dimensional sp2 hybridized graphene has become a material of choice in research due to the excellent properties it displays electrically, thermally, optically and mechanically. Noble nanomaterials also present special physical and chemical properties and, therefore, they provide model building blocks in modifying nanoscale structures for various applications, ranging from nanomedicine to catalysis and optics. The introduction of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) (Au, Ag and Pd) into chemically derived graphene is important in opening new avenues for both materials in different fields where they can provide hybrid materials with exceptional performance due to the synergistical result of the specific properties of each of the materials. This review presents the different synthetic procedures for preparing Pt, Ag, Pd and Au NP/graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites.

A set of (Pt) and earth-abundant transition metals (M = Ni, Fe, Cu) on graphene nanoplatelets (sqPtM/GNPs) was synthesised via sequential deposition to establish parallels between the synthesis method and the materials’ electrochemical properties. sqPtM/GNPs were assessed as bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution (OER) and reduction (ORR) reactions for application in unitised regenerative fuel cells and metal-air batteries. sqPtFe/GNPs showed the highest catalytic performance with a low potential difference of ORR half-wave potential and overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 during OER, a crucial parameter for bifunctional electrocatalysts benchmarking. A novel two-stage synthesis strategy led to higher electrocatalytic performance by facilitating the reactants’ access to the active sites and reducing the charge-transfer resistance.

Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) are better than others in commercially used FCs due to easy availability, less toxicity, and C‐2‐type alcohol. Ethanol has a high theoretical efficiency of 97% and is a safe, plentiful, and renewable resource that can be stored and controlled using the infrastructure that is in place now. Nevertheless, low functional efficiencies and the release of carbon dioxide (CO2), acetaldehyde, and byproducts of acetic acid must be addressed if DEFCs are to grow and become more commercially viable. To overcome these problems, new anode and cathode catalysts are needed, so this review article discusses the introduction of FCs with their structure, working and mechanism. Further, the report covers various types of FC catalysts, and their application in FC technology is explained. The role of the catalyst (such as anode and cathode), similarities and differences between Pt/Pd‐based catalysts, and the importance of supporting materials (such as carbon, transition metal dichalcogenides, MXene, and black phosphorus‐based materials) in DEFCs are described. In addition, the applications, advantages, and disadvantages of the DEFCs are discussed. Finally, the proposed theme is concluded with the existing challenges in this field and the future prospect of DEFCs.
