SiMYBS3, Encoding a Setaria italica Heterosis-Related MYB Transcription Factor, Confers Drought Tolerance in Arabidopsis

Abstract: Drought is a major limiting factor affecting grain production. Drought-tolerant crop varieties are required to ensure future grain production. Here, 5597 DEGs were identified using transcriptome data before and after drought stress in foxtail millet (Setaria italica) hybrid Zhangza 19 and its parents. A total of 607 drought-tolerant genes were screened through WGCNA, and 286 heterotic genes were screened according to the expression level. Among them, 18 genes overlapped. One gene, Seita.9G321800, encoded MYBS3… Show more

“…Changing the lignin content results in an altered structure of the xylem, and it also affects overall water transport in the plant. SiMYB16 positively regulates plant salt tolerance by affecting the biosynthesis of lignin (Yu et al 2023), and CcMYB107 in the legume pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) functioned as a positive regulator of stress-related genes and lignin biosynthesis genes under drought stress (Li et al 2023). In purple false brome (Brachypodium distachyon), SECONDARY WALL ASSOCIATED MYB1 (SWAM1) activated the expression of cellulose and lignin biosynthesis genes, leading to a thicker SCW and more biomass accumulation (Handakumbura et al…”

“…Arabidopsis thaliana is the most studied plant in breeding research, mainly due to this plant's characteristics, which include small size, allowing the plant to grown in small spaces, rapid sexual reproduction, autogamy, short life cycle, and high seed production. Furthermore, an essential characteristic for Arabidopsis to be considered a model species is its possibility of being genetically transformed by Agrobacterium tumefaciens [51,52].…”

“…When subjected to drought stress, MYB transcription factors can play a role in conducting Plants 2024, 13, 710 2 of 19 ABA signals, regulating the transcription of functional genes and other functions, and enhancing the drought resistance of plants [11,12]. The results of multiple studies support MYB as a potential transcription factor for plant breeding and improvement [13,14].…”
