Single‐Atom Nanozyme‐Like Lanthanum Moieties for High‐Performance Electromagnetic Energy Absorption

Metal single‐atoms implanted on nitrogen‐doped carbon matrices (M‐NxCs) can effectively adjust local surface electrons and polarization relaxation through coordination structures to significantly enhance the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties of the materials. However, the precise construction of the geometric and electronic structures of metal single atoms and the discovery of the structure‐absorption relationship at the atomic level confront a huge challenge. Herein, this work summarizes the latest progress in metal single‐atom engineering of EMW absorbing materials via a comprehensive analysis of M‐NxCs in terms of design principles, modulation strategies, and structure‐performance correlations. Subsequently, it highlights the recent progress of several typical M‐NxCs as the EMW absorbing materials, aiming to achieve a complete understanding of the physical effects and atomic‐level absorption mechanisms. Finally, current key challenge and future directions of M‐NxCs are presented by focusing on the electromagnetic functional materials. This work provides new insights for the development of atomically dispersed absorbing materials for efficient electromagnetic response functionalities.

The incorporation of large‐sized rare earth (RE) elements with high coordination characteristics into transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) absorbers while preserving a high 1T phase content during post‐processing poses a significant challenge. To address this, a novel strategy involving the confinement of RE elements within the 1T‐MoS2 lattice via liquid plasma assistance, is proposed. This approach effectively mitigates the environmental impact on the 1T phase of MoS2, yielding a remarkable 1T phase content of 82.69% for Ce20‐D7 (20 wt.% Cerium trinitrate and 7 kV applied voltage). Combining experimental and theoretical investigations reveals that the multi‐orbital characteristics of RE elements facilitate hybridization between the RE‐4f and Mo‐4d orbitals on the MoS2 surface, leading to the occupation of weakly bound electrons in bonding orbitals with short‐distance motion, enhanced inter‐orbital electron‐electron interactions, and induced polarization loss. Notably, the results demonstrate that the Pr15‐D7 sample (15 wt.% praseodymium nitrate and 7 kV applied voltage) exhibits an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.12 GHz at 2.6 mm, with a minimum reflection loss of ‐52.02 dB while the Ce20‐D7 sample achieves an EAB of 6.96 GHz at 2.7 mm. These findings provide valuable insights for the rational design and development of high‐performance TMD absorbers leveraging RE‐modified materials.

A Perspective of Tailoring Dielectric Genes for 2D Materials Toward Advanced Electromagnetic Functions

Abstract2D materials and their composites with electromagnetic properties are becoming increasingly popular. Obtaining insight into the nature of electromagnetic (EM) response manipulation is imperative to guide scientific research and technological exploitation at such a critical time. From this perspective, the dielectric genes of 2D material hybrids have been highlighted based on the recent literature. This endows an unlimited possibility of manipulating the EM response, even at elevated temperatures. The definitions and criteria of dielectric genes toward 2D material hybrids and composites are systematically clarified and summarized. The dielectric gene categories are successfully discriminated, including the conduction networks, intrinsic defects, impurity defects, and interfaces in the composite, and their temperature evolution is revealed in detail. More importantly, tuning strategies for microwave absorption, electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, and expanded electromagnetic functions are thoroughly discussed. Finally, significant predictions are provided for multispectral electromagnetic functions, and future applications of multifunctional exploration are anticipated. Dielectric genes will open an unexpected horizon for advanced functional materials in the coming 5G/6G age, providing a significant boost to promoting environmental electromagnetic protection, electromagnetic devices, and next‐generation smart devices.
