Single Frequency Networks for 5G Broadcast: a Software Defined Radio Experiment

Abstract: Broadcast is a mechanism created for the delivery of the same content to many users simultaneously. This technology has been considered in 3GPP as part of 4G and recently 5G. One of the key solutions to enhance coverage when using 5G broadcast is the use of Single Frequency Networks (SFN), where all transmitters deliver the same content at the same frequency in a synchronized manner. This paper is derived from the 5G-ROSE project, which works towards the transmission of 5G broadcast services over SFN virtualiz… Show more

“…One of the advantages of using this setup is that everything is open to be captured, analyzed and reprogrammed. Due to these caracteristics, the srsRAN suite has been used in a large range of research areas, from cross-technology interference detection [6] to cyber security testing [7] and even 5G broadcast testbeds [8].…”

“…A producer must be responsible for the Program he is taking care of, prepares all the necessary materials for the broadcast, strives for the quality of the content of the show, and be able to communicate and cooperate with the team. Good cooperation in the team can affect the quality of the Program (Ibanez, 2020).…”

“…Such localized content is of interest to a small geographical area and may consist of targeted advertisements, local weather, news etc. SFN [4], a popular technology in broadcasting, is ideally suited for global content but encounters difficulties in supporting local content [5]. This is because the differing local contents simultaneously transmitted using the same set of frequencies interfere with each other at the boundaries between the local service areas (LSAs).…”
