Single incision laparoscopic total abdominal colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis for synchronous colon cancer

Abstract: Single incision laparoscopy is currently performed mostly for basic laparoscopic procedures involving single abdominal quadrants. The aim of this case report is to show that single incision laparoscopic techniques can be utilized for complex abdominal laparoscopic procedures with a large target organ and a working space involving all quadrants of the abdominal cavity. A single incision laparoscopic total abdominal colectomy with an ileorectal anastomosis and intraoperative CO(2) colonoscopy was performed for a… Show more

“…The technique has been employed successfully for a number of colorectal procedures, including right hemicolectomy [2,4,6,8,9,[20][21][22][23][24][25], total colectomy [26][27][28], proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis [28,29], and left colectomy [2,25,30]. Several case reports and series have been published involving use of the SILC technique for sigmoid resection [3,7,[31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38], the largest of which included 10 consecutive patients who underwent resection for recurrent diverticulitis [38].…”

“…Recently, laparoscopic surgery has been used in synchronous colorectal cancers successfully, as evaluated by certain studies; however, controversy remains concerning operative procedures for multiple segmental resections, and total or subtotal colectomy (6,7). Thus, at present, no standard treatment for synchronous colon cancer has been established.…”

“…In some case reports, the authors treated T1 rectal cancer with SCRCs by transanal endoscopic microsurgery before performing a radical operation for the second lesion [43]. In another report, a single-incision laparoscopic total abdominal colectomy with an ileorectal anastomosis and intraoperative CO 2 colonoscopy was successfully performed for a patient with SCRCs of the cecum and the sigmoid colon [44]. …”
