Single-session ureteroscopic pneumatic lithotripsy for the management of bilateral ureteric stones

Abstract: Purpose:In nowadays there is no consensus on single-session ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL) for the management of bilateral ureteric stones. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficacy and safety of single-session URSL in patients with bilateral ureteric stones. Materials and Methods: 41 patients who have undergone bilateral single-session URSL were evaluted in this study. A 8/9.8 Fr Wolf semi-rigid ureteroscope was used for the procedures, and the stones were fragmented with pneumatic lithotripter. Result… Show more

“…Huang et al examined bilateral RIRS in 25 patients with bilateral renal stones and reported an overall SFR of 70%, 92% and 92% after first, second and third procedures, respectively (17). Similarly, the SFRs in our study group were 92.8% and 97.2% after the first and second sessions of RIRS, respectively.…”

“…Although there are several studies related to bilateral rigid ureteroscopy for patients with bilateral ureteral stones, 17,18 there are few reports in the literature about same-session RIRS for the management of bilateral UUSS. [4][5][6] Chon and associates reported bilateral RIRS for the first time in 2005.…”

“…In consensus with our study, a previous trial [19] also stated that it is intensely associated with perforation. Contrarily, a recent study documented that, in some selected cases, ureteroscopy can be done with and without ureteral dilatation with similar success and morbidity [22].…”

“…ureteral perforation, has been reduced to an incidence less than 5%, and long-term complications such as stricture formation also reduced to an incidence of 2% or less [21]. This is incompatible with reports that have shown that lithotripsy is the most efficient and has a role in reducing early postoperative morbidities [17,20,22,23].…”
