Single shot trajectory design for region-specific imaging using linear and nonlinear magnetic encoding fields

Abstract: It has recently been demonstrated that nonlinear encoding fields result in a spatially varying resolution. This work develops an automated procedure to design single-shot trajectories that create a local resolution improvement in a region of interest. The technique is based on the design of optimized local k-space trajectories and can be applied to arbitrary hardware configurations that employ any number of linear and nonlinear encoding fields. The trajectories designed in this work are tested with the current… Show more

“…The strategy we present provides T2 weighted contrast and reduces the number of needed repetition times, while still maintaining resilience to undersampling. However, other strategies share features with this work, including multi-contrast encoding schemes (8, 1013, 35, 48, 49), extended two-dimensional trajectories with multi-contrast properties (50–56), and single shot non-linear gradient encoding strategies (20, 21, 27, 29, 57–61). …”

“…PatLoc uses nonlinear, bijective quadrupolar SEMs and parallel receiver array coils . Each datapoint in a PatLoc acquisition represents a point in the ( k 2xy , kx2y2) domain, and the warped k‐space can be collected using Cartesian , EPI , or radial trajectories . A complete acquisition of this space assigns image intensities to each coordinate in the (2xy, x 2 ‐y 2 ) warped space.…”

“…Initial PatLoc imaging experiments ensured that the limit of 20T/s was not exceeded. Later experiments, especially when combining the PatLoc SEMs with linear SEMs included a stepwise increase of all SEM amplitudes up to the desired SEM amplitude . With the volunteer experiments presented here, using only the PatLoc SEMs for imaging, no PNS was reported although the PatLoc SEM coil was driven at the limits of the specifications.…”

“…All these experiments, on phantoms and volunteers, had improved image resolution at the periphery but reduced resolution in the middle of the acquired images due to the characteristics of the SEMs . To overcome this limitation, PatLoc and linear SEMs are combined with the 4D‐RIO or North West EPI acquisition techniques. Further applications of the PatLoc SEMs include GradLoc , where the PatLoc SEMs are used for phase preparation to allow for imaging with the linear SEMs with reduced field‐of‐view (FOV) without folding artefacts.…”
