Single‐use disposable digital flexible ureteroscopes: an ex vivo assessment and cost analysis

Abstract: The LithoVue is analogous to reusable flexible ureteroscopes in regard to standard technical metrics. Depending on its purchase cost it may also represent a cost saving for hospitals when compared to the cumulative costs of maintaining reusable scopes. Additionally, urologist may consider using the scope in cases in which reusable scope damage is anticipated.

“…In the present study, an economic analysis was also carried our. This suggested that single‐use ureteroscopes offered the greatest value for money when used in low‐volume intuitions (<50 cases/year), and that a low purchase cost is a key to this financial viability . Furthermore, the authors opined that in high‐volume centers, the best application of single‐use ureteroscopes might be for cases carrying a higher risk of instrument damage.…”

“…Of the remaining 646 studies, 59 published between 2000 and 2018 were considered of relevance to the pre-defined queries and were selected for further analysis. The studies consisted of four randomized controlled trial 9,11,38,56 , three multicenter trials 17,30,33 , 40 case series 5,8,10,12,13,15,16,[25][26][27][28][29]31,32,[34][35][36][37]39,41,42,[44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52]54,55,[57][58][59][60][61][62][63]66 , one cadaveric feasibility study 18 , one animal feasibility study 19 , and ten bench top studies…”

“…Several studies have shown that single‐use fURS are becoming more economically viable, especially in lower‐volume centers and for cases with a higher risk of damage to reusable fURS . Several studies have shown that reusable fURS suffer damage requiring repair after 10–25 cases . Once a ureteroscope has been repaired, it is more likely to be damaged again, requiring further repair .…”

“…[6][7][8] Several studies have shown that reusable fURS suffer damage requiring repair after 10-25 cases. 9,10 Once a ureteroscope has been repaired, it is more likely to be damaged again, requiring further repair. 9 The fragility of reusable fURS can result in significant repair costs over time, which has also driven the increased uptake of single-use fURS in some centers.…”
