Site, histological type, and thickness of primary cutaneous malignant melanoma in western Netherlands since 1980

Abstract: An increasing incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma had been observed in the Netherlands. Therefore, between 1989 and 1992 a preventive skin cancer campaign was organized in part of western Netherlands. The effect of this screening campaign has yet to be evaluated by investigating the distribution of all in situ and invasive primary cutaneous melanoma according to anatomical subsite, tumour thickness, and histological type in a population-based study during 1980-92. A total number of 2236 (1361 female; 875… Show more

“…Given the importance of sun exposure during childhood to CMM in adult life (Autier and Doré, 1998), the continuously increasing CMM mortality observed among older people could be the consequence of heavy sun exposure when they were young 2. The decreasing thickness of CMM, reported in several countries, has been more pronounced in younger people (Van der Spek-Keijser et al, 1997;Bucchi et al, 1992) 3. The improvement in survival from CMM does not seem to be entirely attributable to earlier stage at diagnosis or to better medical management (Masbach et al, 1994).…”

“…The predominant anatomical area varies according to age: the disease occurs in areas less exposed to the sun (back, arms, shoulders, legs and thighs) in younger individuals, and in more exposed areas (head, neck) in older individuals. 34,89 The nodular subtype is the second most common amongst Caucasians, accounting for 10-12% of all diagnosed melanomas. 85 As with the superficial spreading melanoma, its anatomical distribution varies with age.…”

“…The first subtype accounts for 5% of melanomas in Caucasians, and is more frequently diagnosed in women, subjects older than 60 years, and in anatomical areas more intensely exposed to the sun. 34,89 The most common subtype among lightskinned individuals is the superficial spreading melanoma, which accounts for 70% of all diagnosed melanomas. The predominant anatomical area varies according to age: the disease occurs in areas less exposed to the sun (back, arms, shoulders, legs and thighs) in younger individuals, and in more exposed areas (head, neck) in older individuals.…”
