Site-Specific Aquifer Characterization and Identification of Potential Groundwater Areas in Pakistan

Abstract: Detailed knowledge about site-specific aquifer characteristics, subsurface lithology, and groundwater potential can help to determine the depth and location of fresh groundwater quality. The present research study was carried out by conducting 80 vertical electrical sounding surveys (VESs) in Rahim Yar Khan District (RYK), Punjab, Pakistan to distinguish the fresh groundwater aquifer from saline groundwater and to evaluate the aquifer protective capacity (APC) of overburden. 1XID software (Interpex, USA) was u… Show more

“…Groundwater quality is primarily influenced by the aquifer rock mineral and recharge pathways (Kohlhepp et al 2017;Liu et al 2017;Gu et al 2017;Kumar et al 2019). As water passes through its recharge pathways from recharge to discharge points, several other types of hydrogeochemical processes alter its physical and chemical properties and in some aquifers, water may be unsuitable for drinking and agriculture (Abd El-Aziz 2017;Dehnavi et al 2011;Farid et al 2017). At least, one-third of the global population rely on groundwater for drinking (Panaskar et al 2016).…”

“…The more signi cant natural sources of high-quality water are surface water from freshwater lakes, rivers, streams, wells, and groundwater from boreholes (Meride and Ayenew, 2016; Boateng et al, 2016). Groundwater loses physical and chemical properties as it ows from recharge to discharge points, creating it un t for human consumption and irrigation purposes (Ali et al, 2018;Farid et al, 2017). Human activities, including mining and manufacturing, have been linked to trace metal contamination in groundwater.…”

“…Water quality is affected in summer season due to leaching process after more rainfall, temperature and due to presence of impure metals (Fisher and Mullican 1997). Chaudhary et al (2002) and Farid et al (2017) stated that about 50% of water is used for irrigation purpose from the wells. So advanced technique of highest efficiency should be adopted to maintain its quality and quantity (Shaofei, et al 2011).…”
