Despite the advances in intelligent systems, there is no guarantee that those systems will always behave normally. Machine abnormalities, unusual responses to controls or false alarms, are still common; therefore, a better understanding of how humans learn and respond to abnormal machine behaviour is essential. Human cognition has been researched in many domains. Numerous theories such as utility theory, three-level situation awareness and theory of dual cognition suggest how human cognition behaves. These theories present the varieties of human cognition including deliberate and naturalistic thinking. However, studies have not taken into consideration varieties of human cognition employed when responding to abnormal machine behaviour. This study reviews theories of cognition, along with empirical work on the significance of human cognition, including several case studies. The different propositions of human cognition concerning abnormal machine behaviour are compared to dual cognition theories. Our results show that situation awareness is a suitable framework to model human cognition of abnormal machine behaviour. We also propose a continuum which represents varieties of cognition, lying between explicit and implicit cognition. Finally, we suggest a theoretical approach to learn how the human cognition functions when responding to abnormal machine behaviour during a specific event. In conclusion, we posit that the model has implications for emerging waves of human-intelligent system collaboration.

Planning the operations within a container terminal is a complex task. It requires planners to demonstrate adaptive behavior while handling stressful, complex, and unexpected situations in today's dynamic and technology dependent workplace. This paper aims at investigating the role of multitasking ability, moderated by an individual's personality type, in predicting planner task performance using simulation gaming methods. Hierarchical regression analysis results demonstrate that the direct effect of multi-tasking ability on performance is positive and significant. With one exception, the personality traits do not significantly intensify or lessen the impact of multi-tasking in predicting task performance. The personality trait, openness to experience, significantly lessens the impact of multitasking ability on performance. Our results suggest that container terminal operators may benefit by considering the above-mentioned results while allocating planning tasks to their employees and new recruits. The instruments used in this research could also be used for evaluating and training candidate planners.

The lack of situation awareness (SA) is the main reason for tower controllers' human errors. How to evaluate the SA of tower controllers is an important problem for controlling the risk of air traffic control system. The current method of measuring the SA of air traffic controllers by using eye movement analysis focuses on radar controllers. To verify the applicability of eye movement analysis in measuring the SA of tower controllers, an experiment platform was built by using the eye tracker and tower control simulation software. The comparison of the two group features including SA, task load, and operation performance, were conducted by the nearest neighbor index (NNI). Results show that the subjects whose fixation feature is dispersed distribution have high SA and improve operation performance under a low task load. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the NNI and SA reveals a significant positive moderate association (r=0.602, p<0.01). Eye tracking can measure the SA of tower controllers, and the NNI can be an auxiliary eye index for SA measurement in dynamic, uncontrolled environments. The conclusion of this study can provide a new reference index for the real-time quantitative assessment of tower controllers' situation awareness level.
