Three-dimensional (3D) printing has experienced a steady increase in popularity for direct manufacturing, where complex geometric items can be produced without the aid of templating tools, and manufacturing waste can be remarkably reduced. While customized medical devices and daily life items can be made by 3D printing of thermoplastics, microbial contamination has been a serious obstacle during their usage. A very clever approaches to overcome this challenge is to incorporate antimicrobial metal or metal oxide (M/MO) nanoparticles within the thermoplastics during or prior to 3D printing. Many M/MO nanoparticles can prevent contamination from a wide range of microorganism, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria via various antimicrobial mechanisms. Additionally, they can be easily printed with thermoplastic without losing their integrity and functionality. In this mini review, we summarize recent advancements and discuss future trends related to the development of 3D printed antimicrobial thermoplastic nanocomposites by addition of M/MO nanoparticles.

The rise of antimicrobial resistance has brought into focus the urgent need for the next generation of antimicrobial coating. Specifically, the coating of suitable antimicrobial nanomaterials on contact surfaces seems to be an effective method for the disinfection/contact killing of microorganisms. In this study, the antimicrobial coatings of graphene@curcumin-copper (GN@CR-Cu) were prepared using a chemical synthesis methodology. Thus, the prepared GN@CR-Cu slurry was successfully coated on different contact surfaces, and subsequently, the GO in the composite was reduced to graphene (GN) by low-temperature heating/sunlight exposure. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the coated GN@CR-Cu for the coating properties, X-ray photon scattering were used for structural characterization and material confirmation. From the morphological analysis, it was seen that CR and Cu were uniformly distributed throughout the GN network. The nanocomposite coating showed antimicrobial properties by contact-killing mechanisms, which was confirmed by zone inhibition and scanning electron microscopy. The materials showed maximum antibacterial activity against E. coli (24 ± 0.50 mm) followed by P. aeruginosa (18 ± 0.25 mm) at 25 µg/mL spot inoculation on the solid media plate, and a similar trend was observed in the minimum inhibition concentration (80 µg/mL) and bactericidal concentration (160 µg/mL) in liquid media. The synthesized materials showed excellent activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa. These materials, when coated on different contact surfaces such medical devices, might significantly reduce the risk of nosocomial infection.

Epoxy Flooring/Oil Fly Ash as a Multifunctional Composite with Enhanced Mechanical Performance for Neutron Shielding and Chemical-Resistance Applications

Heavy-oil fly ash (HOFA) is a graphitic carbon powder extracted in vast amounts as a waste material from burning crude oil in power plants. This HOFA has attractive structural properties besides its high amount of pure carbon (∼90 wt %). This powder exists in spherical, highly porous micron-sized particles, which implies its great potential as a mechanical reinforcement for different polymers. In this work, HOFA has been utilized to enhance the mechanical properties of epoxy flooring at HOFA weight fractions of 0, 1, 1.6, and 3.2 wt %. The obtained results revealed that the prepared epoxy-flooring/ HOFA composites at a HOFA content of 1.6 wt % showed significant mechanical improvements compared with the pristine polymer. The tensile strength and Young's module values were enhanced by ∼17 and 11%, respectively. Furthermore, the neutron-shielding performance was investigated. The composite with 1.6 wt % showed better neutron attenuation and lower transmittance than the pristine epoxy. The chemical resistance was also extensively studied against sodium hydroxide, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid. The changes in morphology, chemical elements, mass, volume, and molecular structures were investigated rigorously for pristine epoxy and its composite with HOFA at 1.6 wt %. After exposure to these chemicals for 21 days, the tested properties of the epoxy-flooring/HOFA composite showed better chemical resistance than that of the pristine epoxy. Where the epoxy-flooring/ HOFA composite showed a surface with low cracks and blistering, it showed lesser changes in mass and volume and fewer molecular structure changes. These results indicated that it is possible to use this multifunctional composite for several applications, including the petrochemical industry, radiation shielding, construction, and automobiles.
