The photovoltaic (PV) generating system has high potential, since the system is clean, environmental friendly and has secure energy sources. There are two types of PV system, which are grid connected and standalone systems. In the grid connected photovoltaic system (GCPV), PV generator supplies power to the grid, whether or not the whole or a portion of the generated energy will be used to supply load demands. Meanwhile, the standalone photovoltaic system (SAPV) is used to fulfil a load demand that close to its point of use. These days, many researchers study in term of optimization sizing of photovoltaic system, in order to select optimum number of PV modules, inverter, battery storage capacity, and tilt angle. Based on that, this review aims to give explanations on approaches done by previous researchers in order to find ultimate combinations for design parameters. Moreover, the paper discusses on modelling of PV system components, which includes PV panels’ output power estimation and battery system. Finally, simulation softwares that used as sizing tools in previous studies are reviewed and studied.

As pointed out in several analyses, Stand-Alone Photovoltaic systems may be a relevant option for rural electrification in Developing Countries. In this context, Micro and Small Enterprises which supply customized Stand-Alone Photovoltaic systems play a pivotal role in the last-mile-distribution of this technology. Nevertheless, a number of issues limit the development of these enterprises curbing also potential spinoff benefits. A common business bottleneck is the lack of technical skills since usually few people have the expertise to design and formulate estimates for customers. The long-term solution to tackle this issue implies the implementation of a capacity building process, but this solution rarely matches with time-to-market urgency of local enterprises. Therefore, we propose in this study a simple, but general methodology which can be used to set up Design Support Tools for Micro and Small Enterprises that supply Stand-Alone Photovoltaic systems in rural areas of Developing Countries. After a brief review of the techniques and commercial software available to design the targeted technology, we describe the methodology highlighting the structure, the sizing equations and the main features that should be considered in developing a Design Support Tool. Then, we apply the methodology to set up a tool for use in Uganda and we compare the results with two commercial codes (NSolVx and HOMER). The results show that the implemented Design Support Tool develops correct system designs and presents some advantages for being disseminated in rural areas. Indeed it supports the user in providing the input data, selecting the main system components and delivering estimates to customers.

Neste trabalho será abordado o estudo e a simulação de sistemas de geração de energia elétrica utilizando tecnologia fotovoltaica. Para a caracterização do sistema planejado serão utilizados modelos matemáticos já existentes, os quais estão integrados em uma ferramenta computacional de caráter prático e base científica denominada PVSize. Este software foi desenvolvido no Laboratório de Energia Solar da UFRGS e escrito em linguagem Visual Basic 5. O programa, através se uma simulação em base horária, é capaz de avaliar, para um sistema instalado no Brasil, o número de baterias e módulos com seu correspondente risco de déficit de energia. Como parte do processo será avaliado o comportamento dos modelos por meio de simulações em computador e a seguir serão comparados estes resultados com os valores obtidos em uma instalação experimental, com características de um sistema isolado. Valores de radiação solar, temperatura ambiente, velocidade do vento e consumo serão medidas para serem utilizados como variáveis de entrada no PVSize. A corrente e a tensão fornecidas pelos módulos, assim como a tensão da bateria, também serão medidas. Resultados parciais obtidos através da simulação e da instalação experimental foram comparados, obtendo-se comportamentos similares, sendo os valores de energia gerada na simulação ligeiramente menores que os medidos.
