Skeletal muscle metastases from lung cancer

Abstract: Lung cancers are diagnosed at a metastatic stage in 40% to 50% of cases. Skeletal muscle metastases are rare and usually discovered at autopsy. We report 3 cases of skeletal muscle metastasis. Muscular metastasis revealed the cancer in one patient. The metastases were asymptomatic in all patients. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically in one case and by radiography in the other 2. The evolution was characterized by tumor progression and death after 1-7 months.

“…Lung cancer despite being the tumour that more metasta sizes to skeletal muscle, that occurrence is considered rare. Several the ories have been proposed to explain this unusual event as the following: skeletal muscle is an adverse environment for tumour cells because of the intermittent contraction of the muscle, lactic acid production and variation of blood flow; skeletal muscle can produce a strong immune response; and the resistance of skeletal muscle to tumour implantation, causes a slow progression of metastatic tumours [3] [4].…”

“…The lung adenocarcinoma histological type was the most often found in patients with muscle involvement and the diaphragm was the skeletal muscle most frequently affected (8%) [4]. However, in the literature, there are few cases of diaphragmatic metastasis secondary to lung cancer, and reports on this rare entity are most often found in association with the presence of gastrointestinal tumors [5]- [7].…”

“…Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States, with an estimated 224,210 novel cases and 159,260 mortalities in 2014 (6). The malignant tumor can metastasize to almost every region of the body, including skeletal muscle, although this is rather rare (7). There is no consensus on the optimal therapeutic strategy for muscle metastasis, as it may be the end-stage presentation of lung cancer (8).…”

“…Other metastatic sites as skeletal muscle are extremely rare [1] [2], and there are very few cases described in literature [3] [4]. Some of these muscle metastases are diagnosed only when the autopsy is performed, since they are mostly asymptomatic [5]. Several factors have been proposed to explain the rarity of this type of metastases, such as blood flow in the muscle tissue, the type of cell metabolism, trauma and muscle contraction.…”
