Context: In modern software development, software modeling is considered to be an essential part of the software architecture and design activities. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) has become the de facto standard for software modeling in industry. Surprisingly, there are only a few empirical studies on the practices and impacts of UML modeling in software development. This is mainly due to the lack of empirical data on real-life software systems that use UML modeling. Objective: This PhD thesis contributes to this matter by describing a method to build and curate a big corpus of open-source-software (OSS) projects that contain UML models. Subsequently, this thesis offers observations on the practices and impacts of using UML modeling in these OSS projects. Method: We combine techniques from repository mining and image classification in order to successfully identify more than 24.000 open source projects on GitHub that together contain more than 93.000 UML models. Machine learning techniques are also used to enrich the corpus with annotations. Finally, various empirical studies, including a case study, a user study, a large-scale survey and an experiment, have been carried out across this set of projects. Result: The results show that UML is generally perceived to be helpful to new contributors. The most important motivation for using UML seems to be to facilitate collaboration. In particular, teams use UML during communication and planning of joint implementation efforts. Our study also shows that the use of UML modeling has a positive impact on software quality, i.e. it correlates with lower defect proneness. Further, we find out that visualisation of design concepts, such as class role-stereotypes, helps developers to perform better in software comprehension tasks.

Creating visual imagery helps us to situate ourselves within unknown worlds, processes, make connections, and find solutions. By exploring drawn ideas for novel technologies, we can examine the implications of their place in the world. Drawing, or sketching, for future inquiry in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) can be a stand-alone investigative approach, part of a wider 'worldbuilding' in design fiction, or simply ideation around a concept. By examining instances of existing practice in HCI, in this paper we establish recommendations and rationales for those wishing to utilise sketching and drawing within their research. We examine approaches ranging from ideation, diagramming, scenario building, comics creation and artistic representation to create a model for sketching and drawing as future inquiry for HCI. This work also reflects on the ways in which these arts can inform and elucidate research and practice in HCI, and makes recommendations for the field, within its teaching, processes and outcomes. Characteristics, potentials, and limitations of open-source Simulink projects for empirical research

Simulink is an example of a successful application of the paradigm of model-based development into industrial practice. Numerous companies create and maintain Simulink projects for modeling software-intensive embedded systems, aiming at early validation and automated code generation. However, Simulink projects are not as easily available as code-based ones, which profit from large publicly accessible open-source repositories, thus curbing empirical research. In this paper, we investigate a set of 1734 freely available Simulink models from 194 projects and analyze their suitability for empirical research. We analyze the projects considering (1) their development context, (2) their complexity in terms of size and organization within projects, and (3) their evolution over time. Our results show that there are both limitations and potentials for empirical research. On the one hand, some application domains dominate the development context, and there is a large number of models that can be considered toy examples of limited practical relevance. These often stem from an academic context, consist of only a few Simulink blocks, and are no longer (or have never been) under active development or maintenance. On the other hand, we found that a subset of the analyzed models is of considerable size and complexity. There are models comprising several thousands of blocks, some of them highly modularized by hierarchically organized Simulink subsystems. Likewise, some of the models expose an active maintenance span of several years, which indicates that they are used as primary development artifacts throughout a project’s lifecycle. According to a discussion of our results with a domain expert, many models can be considered mature enough for quality analysis purposes, and they expose characteristics that can be considered representative for industry-scale models. Thus, we are confident that a subset of the models is suitable for empirical research. More generally, using a publicly available model corpus or a dedicated subset enables researchers to replicate findings, publish subsequent studies, and use them for validation purposes. We publish our dataset for the sake of replicating our results and fostering future empirical research.
