Ski piste snow ablation versus potential infiltration (Veporic Unit, Western Carpathians)

Abstract: Snow production results in high volume of snow that is remaining on the low-elevation ski pistes after snowmelt of natural snow on the off-piste sites. The aim of this study was to identify snow/ice depth, snow density, and snow water equivalent of remaining ski piste snowpack to calculate and to compare snow ablation water volume with potential infiltration on the ski piste area at South-Central Slovak ski center Košútka (Inner Western Carpathians; temperate zone). Snow ablation water volume was calculated fr… Show more

“…From the agronomic point of view, the importance of soil texture is associated with the implementation of various amelioration measures, such as drainage, irrigation, compaction of coarse soils, aeration, and increasing of permeability of fine soils. From the hydrological point of view, the soil particle size distribution is essential for water movement in the soil profile as it influences infiltration rate, water holding capacity, water content constants, and hydraulic conductivity, and the overall hydrological balance of the area [8][9][10]. The results of the particle size analyses are of key importance for plant fertilization and liming, and also for the actual cultivation of the soil, e.g., determination of difficultness and effortfulness of agronomical interventions.…”

“…Ways were explored how to constrain the parameters of the snowmelt components of an HBV-type model and improve its performance (Sleziak et al, 2020). Studies focusing on the distribution of snow cover in the forests and ski slopes in Central Slovakia were also conducted, and implications for ecosystem services were defined (Mikloš et al, 2020a;Mikloš et al, 2020b).…”

“…Geographic information systems (GIS) are not limited to the field of geography per se [1], but have found broad application in agriculture [2][3][4][5], forestry [6,7], pedology [8], ecology [9], environmental studies [10][11][12][13], botany, biology, landscape planning [14], land consolidation projects [15] and nature conservation. The interconnection of GIS with other diverse scientific disciplines is necessary in the development of methodological procedures and terminology for working with spatial soil data [16].…”
