Slanted Objectivity? Perceived Media Bias, Cable News Exposure, and Political Attitudes*

Abstract: This research explores the consequences of a fragmented television news audience. The recent proliferation of a wide array of television news sources has influenced the manner in which a large number of Americans get their information about politics and government. The political consequences of media fragmentation and the polarization of the U.S. television news audience are explored. Copyright (c) 2007 by the Southwestern Social Science Association.

“…President Bush was an incumbent, but had been declared the winner in the 2000 election only after extensive controversy, which may have led Republicans to feel the legitimacy of their higher status was threatened (Bettencourt et al, 2001). In addition, conservative sources have increasingly claimed widespread liberal bias in the media and broader American culture (Iyengar & Hahn, 2009; Lee, 2005; Morris, 2007).…”

“…In the United States, his Fox News channel adopted a narrowcast model of aiming at viewers who wanted news from a particular political perspective and found a large conservative audience with its right-wing tabloid-style presentation of news (Allan and Zelizer, 2004, pp. 6Á7;Collins, 2004;DellaVigna and Kaplan, 2007;Morris, 2007). By contrast, in the United Kingdom, Rupert Murdoch's ownership of Sky News prompted fears before its launch that it would be tabloid ''page three television'' but, nearly a decade later, as a Guardian reporter noted, British Sky News: ''has confounded cynics by maturing into a well-funded and award-winning 24 hour news operation'' (Gibson, 2007).…”
