Sleep quality in patients on maintenance hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis

Abstract: Background:Sleep disturbances are common among uremic patients; however, limited data are available on predictors of sleep quality in this population. We assessed sleep quality in patients on hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) and investigated predictors related to sleep quality. Methods:Patients on maintenance HD and PD were consecutively included from two medical centers in Isfahan city (Iran). They completed the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and hospital anxiety and depression scale. Labo… Show more

“…Many studies relate increase in age to a low quality of sleep in patients under chronic hemodialysis, (1, 2, 4, 9, 10, 15, 22, 23) while other studies do not show such relationship (14,16,17,24). In our study, patients had a lower quality of sleep with increasing age, but only up to the age thresh-…”

“…Most previous studies did not find any relation between these two (2,4,14,16). It is possible that coexisting factors such as depression and anxiety, which were related to the quality of sleep in our study, were also responsible for the difference in the quality of sleep between these two groups.…”

“…However, contradictory studies are also available that suggest that quality of sleep in MHD patients is not related to age, gender, biochemical parameters, and other factors mentioned above [4,6]. Sleep quality has been reported to be independent of type of dialysis, i.e., the MHD and peritoneal dialysis suggesting that it could be either the burden of illness or the biochemical parameters that govern the quality of sleep [9,11].…”

“…Sleep quality has been shown to be poor in patients undergoing hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis [2] . As a result of a study on sleep disorders in hemodialysis patients, it has been said that in patients with end-stage renal insufficiency, sleep disorders may be associated with more complicated events than bodily accumulation of waste materials [3] .…”

“…Mood disorders have been established as one of the determinative factors of sleep quality in dialysis patients [2] . The coexistence and association of depression and sleep disorders is widely reported in hemodialysis patients [8] .…”
