Dispersion relation is obtained for an axisymmetric periodic slow-wave structure having arbitrary radial profile driven by an electron beam that is confined by a finite axial magnetic field. The slow-wave structure wall profile is expressed by a finite Fourier series sum, and field theory is utilized for derivation of the dispersion relation. Numerical analysis is carried out to study Cerenkov and slow cyclotron instabilities.

We present the theory, design and numerical modeling of novel, pulsed sub-THz oscillators based on cylindrical, two-dimensional (2D) periodic surface lattice (PSL) interaction cavities. Investigation of the electronic efficiency and power dependence on the magnitude of the magnetic guide field and the electron beam current is investigated. While cyclotron absorption effects have been studied in low order, 1D BWOs, few studies have considered cyclotron absorption in highly overmoded, 2D-PSL oscillators. Here we investigate certain behavior associated with cyclotron absorption in 2D-PSL devices with over 400 modes. This electron cyclotron absorption is shown to be a universal process, independent of frequency and transverse cavity size. Dispersive behavior shows minimal group velocity at the point of interaction and demonstrates similarities with degenerate band edge phenomena. In this work, the fundamental mode selection mechanism relies on the coupling of high-order volume and surface waves. Good agreement between theory and modeling is presented.

Absolute and global instabilities driven by Cherenkov interaction between magnetized electron beam and spoof surface plasmon polaritons

In this study, we examine absolute and global instabilities driven by the Cherenkov interaction between a magnetized electron beam and spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with an azimuthal mode number m. The absolute and global instabilities are induced in long and short lengths of the cylindrical corrugated waveguides (CCWs), respectively. The temporal and spatial growth rates have different dominant modes of spoof SPPs that, respectively, affect the absolute and global instabilities. In the experiment, the G-band radiation, which corresponds to the dominant mode in the spatial growth rate, is observed with the short length CCW. In the long CCW, the G-band radiation vanishes because the dominant mode in the temporal growth rate has lower frequency than the G-band cutoff frequency of the detecting system. Our results demonstrate that the instability and the multimode radiation are changed by the length of the CCW.
