Small-angle X-ray scattering analysis of porous powders of CaCO3

Abstract: The results of small-angle and ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering on porous CaCO 3 microparticles of pulverulent vaterite made by a conventional chemical route and by using supercritical CO 2 are presented. The scattering curves are analysed in the framework of the Guinier-Porod model, which gives the radii of gyration of the scattering objects and their fractal dimension. In addition, the porosity and the specific surface area are determined by using the Porod invariant, which is modified to take into account… Show more

“…S and V are the total surface area and total volume seen by a neutron or X-ray beam, respectively. Many experimental systems show clear Porod’s law scattering patterns 21 , 27 30 that can be measured by either small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) or small-angle X-ray scattering. Even though the conventional Porod’s law has been widely applied to porous systems to determine the average SLD and the total surface area, it cannot provide any information of the variation of SLD in pore surfaces that is closely linked to the variation of compositional properties of pore matrix.…”

“…It is worth pointing out in some special cases [39,41] Case 4 ( Fig. 1(e)) is similar to Case 3 except that the domains have different volume fractions of the tiny pores accessible to guest fluid, ( ).…”

“…The scattering curves analysis gives information on the scattering objects at the level of their fractal dimension as well as an estimation of the pores size at the inner interface in real space. 27 Figure 5 shows the SAXS diffractograms of P and NP hydrogels and of the corresponding composites prepared by rapidly mixing of CaCl 2 and Na 2 CO 3 (method M1).…”
