Small island watershed morphometric and hydrological characteristics in Ambon Region, Maluku Province

Abstract: With a relatively limited catchment area, the small island has special hydrological conditions. The hydro-morphometric approach of a watershed is essential for tracking and analyzing seasonal changes in small island watersheds’ hydrological characteristics. It is crucial to incorporate the hydrological elements of small islands, both geographically, ecologically, socio-culturally, and economically. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the morphometric and hydrological characteristics of small island watershe… Show more

“…41 of 2000 [85]. Watersheds of the small islands are characterized by a relatively short length of the main river, and the water mostly flows directly to the sea [86]. Water-related issues on small islands are water shortage and groundwater quality [87][88][89][90][91] due to limited water storage capacity [92], geological characteristics, lack of land cover [93], and narrow areas of rainwater catchment [86].…”

“…In the last five years, the potential for widespread flood hazards for Ambon Island has experienced flooding and landslides with the impact of infrastructure damage, fatalities, and deaths relatively high. The possibility of residents being exposed to flooding in the five watersheds of Ambon City is relatively high due to the condition of the river border protection area crowded with settlements, and the number of vulnerable groups is high [1]. The study of hydrometeorology of watersheds such as densely populated cities becomes a need for watershed-based regional development.…”
