Plastic and, particularly, microplastic (MP) pollution is a growing research theme, dedicated largely to marine systems. Occurring at the land–sea interface, estuarine habitats such as mangroves are at risk of plastic pollution. This study compared MP pollution (level, morphotype, polymer composition, size and colour) across four South African estuaries, in relation to the built and natural environment. Mouth status, surrounding human population densities and land-use practices influenced the level and type of MP pollution. Systems that were most at risk were predominantly open estuaries surrounded by high population densities and diverse land use types. Microplastic levels and the diversity of types detected increased with increasing levels of anthropogenic disturbance. Overall, microfibres dominated in estuarine water (69%) and mangrove sediment (51%). Polyethylene (43%) and polypropylene (23%) were the dominant polymers overall. Weathered fishing gear, weathered packaging items and run-off from urban/industrial centres are probable sources of MP pollution . Increased run-off and river input during the wet/rainy season may explain the markedly higher MP loads in estuarine waters relative to the dry season. By contrast, MP deposition in mangrove sediment was higher during the dry season. Sediment MP abundance was significantly positively correlated with both pneumatophore density and sediment size (500–2000 µm). This study highlights the role of mangroves as MP sinks, which may limit movement of MPs into adjacent environments. However, under conditions such as flooding and extreme wave action, mangroves may shift from sinks to sources of plastic pollution.

Microplastics pollution in Vietnam has been received more attention in recent years due to its adverse impacts on the environment. The coastal areas, especially estuary is potential accumulation zone of microplastics. These locations, where inland waters meet the ocean, are heavily impacted by anthropogenic activities and the dynamic of the sea currents. This study aims to investigate the spatial distribution, physical characteristics, and chemical composition of microplastics in beach sand in Can Gio, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. A total of 90 sand samples from five sampling sites were collected in November 2019, they were analyzed for size, shape, color, and identity. The results showed that microplastics concentration ranged from 0 to 6.58 pieces/ kg d.w. Microplastics tend to be distributed along the upper-shore line and in the surface layer of sand. The data revealed that microplastics ranging from 2.8–5 mm were the most abundant (72.46%), pellet shape accounted for the highest proportion (41.31%), white and blue are two popular colours up to 80% in total of detected microplastics. Chemical composition of the microplastics was determined by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy, polypropylene and polystyrene are the two most common plastic types in this study. Macroplastics found in beach sand samples were also assessed, the study shows a positive correlation between microplastic and macroplastic, showing the possible origin of microplastics. The findings of this study provided more insights into the microplastic pollution status in beach sand and the foundation for future investigation.

Micro and Nanoplastics Identification: Classic Methods and Innovative Detection Techniques

Micro and nanoplastics are fragments with dimensions less than a millimeter invading all terrestrial and marine environments. They have become a major global environmental issue in recent decades and, indeed, recent scientific studies have highlighted the presence of these fragments all over the world even in environments that were thought to be unspoiled. Analysis of micro/nanoplastics in isolated samples from abiotic and biotic environmental matrices has become increasingly common. Hence, the need to find valid techniques to identify these micro and nano-sized particles. In this review, we discuss the current and potential identification methods used in microplastic analyses along with their advantages and limitations. We discuss the most suitable techniques currently available, from physical to chemical ones, as well as the challenges to enhance the existing methods and develop new ones. Microscopical techniques (i.e., dissect, polarized, fluorescence, scanning electron, and atomic force microscopy) are one of the most used identification methods for micro/nanoplastics, but they have the limitation to produce incomplete results in analyses of small particles. At present, the combination with chemical analysis (i.e., spectroscopy) overcome this limit together with recently introduced alternative approaches. For example, holographic imaging in microscope configuration images microplastics directly in unfiltered water, thus discriminating microplastics from diatoms and differentiates different sizes, shapes, and plastic types. The development of new analytical instruments coupled with each other or with conventional and innovative microscopy could solve the current problems in the identification of micro/nanoplastics.
