Small printed meander symmetrical and asymmetrical antenna performances, including the RF cable effect, in the 315 MHz frequency band

Abstract: An easily manufactured, reduced size, symmetrical printed meander dipole antenna for remote keyless entry (RKE) automotive applications in the 315 MHz frequency band is proposed. The efficiency and directionality of this symmetrical antenna is estimated and compared with the efficiency and directionality of an asymmetrical antenna. Numerical and experimental results are presented. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 48: 1828–1833, 2006; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.intersci… Show more

“…Recently, several methods have been vastly investigated for size reduction in different studies. Transmission line loaded with series or shunt impedances instead of each quarter wavelength transformers have been reported [1][2][3][4]. The combinations of short high impedance transmission lines and shunt lumped capacitors have been considered [5][6][7].…”

“…Numerous applications, such as remote control systems, portable handsets, personal data assistants, radio frequency identification tags, and implants, demand low-profile and compact antennas. The meander dipole antenna (MDA) is one valid solution for this type of application [1][2][3].…”

“…The control unit contains an RKE antenna that receives a coded signal transmitted from the handheld device; thus, the reading distance of the system is determined by radiation characteristics of the RKE antenna. To improve radiation characteristics, a lot of effort has been focused on developing a standalone RKE antenna with a higher gain and an omni-directional pattern [6][7][8][9][10]. Despite the antenna performance improvement, the reading range cannot be ensured for all directions of remote access because the most critical factor reducing the range is caused by wave blockage, reflection, and coupling effects from the vehicle structure.…”

“…Moreover, a miniature microstrip antenna with a partially filled high-permittivity substrate for repeater system was presented in [3]. On the other hand, to obtain antenna size-reduction, the technique using meander-shape microstrip structure is popularly adopted in RFID application [4], WLAN system [5], mobile handsets [6], and so on [7].…”
