Small section graphite calorimeter (GR-10) at LNE-LNHB for measurements in small beams for IMRT

Abstract: Within the Euramet JRP7 project External Beam Cancer Therapy, a work package was dedicated to the primary standards for IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy). The French national metrology laboratory for ionizing radiations, LNE-LNHB, was involved in determining absorbed dose to water based on graphite calorimeters in 6 MV and 12 MV beams for field sizes of 10 cm × 10 cm, 4 cm × 4 cm and 2 cm × 2 cm. The existing GR-09 graphite calorimeter has been successfully used for the beam sizes of 10 cm × 10 cm a… Show more

“…As a more direct alternative method to realize absorbed dose in nonstandard fields, new graphite and water calorimeters specifically designed to measure dose based on first principles are being developed . Oftentimes, these calorimetry systems are also made to be transportable to permit operation at the user's facility .…”

“…All graphite calorimeters at LNE-LNHB have the same structure described in [7,11]. They are made of 3 bodies: a core, a jacket and a shield.…”

“…Recently, the LNE-LNHB also established dosimetric references in 4 cm x 4 cm and 2 cm x 2cm beams [6] by diminishing the size of the dosimeters [7] in order to keep them fully exposed. For smaller field sizes, a new approach has been suggested based on the use of large dosimeters to measure the absorbed dose deposited by the irradiation beam on its surface [8][9] (Figure 1).…”

“…As a more direct alternative method to realize absorbed dose in MRgRT, and more generally, in nonstandard fields, new transportable graphite and water calorimeters specifically designed to measure absorbed dose based on first principles at the user’s facilities have been developed . Even among primary standards, absorbed dose calorimetry is considered the most direct and absolute method of determining absorbed dose to water since device calibration can be achieved in terms of quantities with traceable standards (i.e.…”

“…Once again, this was done to keep the Aerrow more in‐line with ICs, but more importantly, measuring directly in water simplifies the dose conversion process and does away with the need for an additional transfer step. In contrast to all other graphite calorimeters, the Aerrow design incorporates a rigid aerogel‐based material as opposed to a vacuum to achieve thermal isolation from the surrounding environment …”
