Abstract-Information and communication technologies (ICT)represent a fundamental element in the growth and performance of smart grids. A sophisticated, reliable and fast communication infrastructure is, in fact, necessary for the connection among the huge amount of distributed elements, such as generators, substa-tions, energy storage systems and users, enabling a real time ex-change of data and information necessary for the management of the system and for ensuring improvements in terms of efficiency, reliability, flexibility and investment return for all those involved in a smart grid: producers, operators and customers. This paper overviews the issues related to the smart grid architecture from the perspective of potential applications and the communications requirements needed for ensuring performance, flexible operation, reliability and economics.Index Terms-Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), demand Response, smart Grid Communications.

Abstract:The smart grid can be seen as a hybrid system composed by many systems. From a large scale point of view, it combines the electric power system itself and a heterogeneous information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure. Additionally, these systems are composed by many building blocks that are designed and managed as separated systems which are hard to fully integrate between each other. Relying on the experiences arisen and the knowledge gathered from the partners during the development of the FP7 European projects INTEGRIS (intelligent electrical grid sensor communications) and FINESCE (future internet smart utility services), this paper presents the software defined utility (SDU) concept for the management of the smart grid and its security, which advocates for the migration of the utility infrastructure to software systems instead of relying on complex and rigid hardware based systems. Following this approach, SDU proposes the evolution of power systems' ICT and the usage of programmable commodity hardware, low-cost sensors, and reliable high-speed IP-based communications underneath. More concretely, this paper proposes some building blocks for the deployment of the SDU (flexible data management infrastructure, context-aware security and web of things interface) and evaluates their functionalities and benefits for the smart grids of the future.

Abstract-The electricity market is threatened by supply scarcity, which may lead to very sharp price spikes in the spot market. On the other hand, demand-side's activities could effectively mitigate the supply scarcity and absorb most of these shocks and therefore smooth out the price volatility. In this paper, the positive effects of employing demand response programs on the spot market price are investigated. A demand-price elasticity based model is used to simulate the customer reaction function in the presence of a real time pricing. The demand achieve by DR program is used to adjust the spot market price by using a price regression model. SAS software is used to run the multiple linear regression model and MATLAB is used to simulate the demand response model. The approach is applied on one week data in summer 2014 of Connecticut in New England ISO. It could be concluded from the results of this study that applying DR program smooths out most of the price spikes in the electricity spot market and considerably reduces the customers' electricity cost.
