Smart Logistics – Conceptualization and Empirical Evidence

Abstract: Industry 4.0 approaches have gained increasing relevance and impact on logistics research and practical applications. However, logistics research often focuses on the investigation of isolated concepts, which leads to a systematic neglect of more holistic research frameworks. Therefore, this paper conceptualises Smart Logistics as an important element within the context of Industry 4.0 approaches. Furthermore, a set of technological concepts for Smart Logistics is identified and potential applications are outl… Show more

“…The fourth industrial revolution incorporates the implementation and integration of information technology and networking from the third industrial revolution to develop intelligent production and services [30] to support customer satisfaction, improve operations, and connect production and logistics processes smoothly along the entire supply chain [31]. These technologies have been adopted in various applications, including logistics activities, advancing traditional logistics to become "Smart Logistics (Logistics 4.0)" [32][33][34][35][36][37].…”

“…During the last decade, Industry 4.0 initiatives developed a multitude of technologies and technological concepts which can be used to strengthen the competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises based on the principles of digitalization, interconnectivity, and autonomization [1,2]. Thereby, recent empirical studies outline the importance of training the human factors within the environment of Industry 4.0-based production and logistics processes as one of the main prerequisites toward the transition to a smart factory [3,4].…”
