Smart On-Off Switching Luminescence Materials with Reversible Piezochromism and Basichromism

Abstract: Three novel smart fluorescent on‐off materials based on hemicyanine, 3‐(2‐((1E,3E)‐4‐(3‐(4‐Fluorophenyl)‐1‐isopropyl‐1H‐indol‐2‐yl)buta‐1,3‐dien‐1‐yl)naphtho[1, 2‐d]thiazol‐1‐ium‐1‐yl)propane‐1‐sulfonate (NTPS‐FPI), (E)‐3‐(2‐(2‐(2‐hy‐droxynaphthalen‐1‐yl)vinyl)naphtho[1, 2‐d]thiazol‐1‐ium‐1‐yl)propane‐1‐sulfonate (NTPS‐HN) and (E)‐2‐(2‐(2‐hydroxynaphthalen‐1‐yl)vinyl)‐1,1,3‐trimethyl‐1H‐benz‐o[e]indol‐3‐ium iodide (BI‐HN), have been developed. They exhibit red or near‐infrared (NIR) emission and tunable on‐off… Show more

“…It means the color of the stimuli-responsive materials can be changed by these six external stimuli. The chemochromic feature has several subsidiaries including basichromism, [24,25] hydrochromism, [26,27] solvatochromism, [28,29] and vapochromism. [30,31] All of these stimuli-responsive properties (hydrochromic, solvatochromic, and vapochromic) react to a specific chemical substance such as water or ammonia vapor [32] in different phases (gas, liquid, and solid).…”

“…Organic crystalline materials that exhibit tunable and switchable photoluminescence (PL) emission find promising applications in the fields of sensors, data storage and optoelectronic devices [1,2]. There is considerable research interest in controlling their optical properties through non-covalent routes, by modulating molecular conformation, as well as the collective arrangement and interaction mode of molecules in the solid [3−5].…”

“…Organic light‐emitting materials, especially luminescent materials that are sensitive to external stimuli, show great promise for applications in chemical sensors, storage media, anticounterfeiting ink, and optoelectronic devices . Among these materials, thermo‐ and mechanoresponsive luminescent materials are particularly appealing.…”
