SmartBone: An Energy-Efficient Smart Backbone Construction in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: Wireless sensor network is a rapidly growing discipline with new technologies emerging, and new applications under development. The nodes in a wireless network generally communicate with each other along the same wireless channel. Unfortunately, sharing among wireless channels decreases network performance due to radio interference, and also raises energy consumption due to packet retransmission when interference occurs. Many topology control algorithms have been proposed to solve these problems. One widely us… Show more

“…V is marked as blue and uses a large-range radio to locally broadcast the message. (11) if there exists a blue node ∈ V ⋅ then (12) V uses a small-range radio in the backbone. (13) else if there exists a most powerful node ∈ , where is the set of yellow nodes in V ⋅ then (14) V uses a small-range radio in the backbone and sends a message to .…”

“…In [10], an algorithm was proposed to construct a backbone in the wireless sensor network such that the cost of routing would be reduced. In [12], Chuang and Chen proposed a novel heuristic-based backbone algorithm, called SmartBone. In SmartBone, two steps are required to form a backbone to improve energy saving in the network.…”

“…The problem of constructing a hierarchical structure in wireless multihop networks for increased scalability and overall protocol efficiency has been widely investigated both in the contexts of ad hoc networks and, more recently, of WSN . The majority of existing solutions for WSN are clustering schemes , in which sensors within a geographical region are grouped into a cluster and locally managed by a cluster head (CH) – a node elected to coordinate the nodes within the cluster and to be responsible for inter‐cluster communication.…”
