Snowball Sampling and Facebook: How Social Media Can Help Access Hard-to-Reach Populations

Abstract: The snowball sampling method (SSM) is one of the most widely used methods to collect information about hard-to-reach populations and in low-information contexts. This article argues that SSM can be enhanced by the use of Facebook in at least three ways. This social-networking site helps to address some of the inherent limitations of SSM by learning about local contexts and identifying principal political actors, by gathering background information about and establishing contact with them, and by triangulating … Show more

“…We used a non-probability sampling technique because survey participants were chosen randomly and voluntarily. With the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the SSM provides significant advantages, especially when enhanced by using social media ( Dosek, 2021 ), and other sampling strategies are unlikely to succeed. This method is based on recommendations from originally selected respondents to additional people thought to have the same interest in the subject.…”

“…This study is qualitative, with an exploratory–descriptive character, and operationalized through an online survey shared through the social networks WhatsApp and Instagram, which proved to be better suited to the “snowball” research model [ 68 , 69 ]. For Dewes [ 70 ], snowball sampling is indicated when there is difficulty in identifying all members of the investigated population.…”

“…Respondents from the snowball sample did not receive an incentive for completing the TFH survey. This mode of data collection is particularly beneficial for reaching hard-to-reach populations such as the reclusive wealthy and stigmatized poor ( Dosek, 2021 ; Kayrouz et al, 2016 ). The inclusion criteria in the TFH survey consisted of being an adult resident of the above neighborhoods.…”
