Social memory and niche construction in a hypervariable environment

Abstract: Background: Communities in southwest Madagascar have co-evolved with a hypervariable environment and climate. The paleoclimate record reflects major fluctuations in climatic conditions over the course of Holocene human settlement.Archeological evidence indicates short-term occupations of sites, suggesting that frequent residential mobility and flexible subsistence strategies have been central features of life on the southwest coast for millennia. Today, despite rapid changes linked to globalization and increas… Show more

“…Research from diverse disciplines has pointed to the multitude of behavioural adaptations humans use to reduce risk [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Individuals are able to access a number of mechanisms depending on need and circumstance [17], and specific mechanisms cluster together and strengthen one another [10,18]. Some adaptations seek to pool risk by transferring it between wealthier and needier households (similar to insurance), while others seek to absorb or retain risk within the household with increased resources (i.e., stored food avoids starvation when harvests fail) [14].…”

“…Currently, most Mikea living in the Namonte Basin reside in villages that are usually located near lake margins, where they fish, cultivate crops, and herd zebu and goats. Mikea complement their diet with a range of forest products, including wild tubers (Dioscorea, Colocasia, Ipomoea, and Tacca), honey, and wild meat (e.g., birds, tortoises, tenrecs and feral cats; Tucker, 2007;Douglass and Rasolondrainy, 2021). Deforestation has intensified greatly since the 1970s, with ∼55% of the primary forest lost between 1949and 2004(Blanc-Pamard et al, 2005.…”

“…For Vezo migrants, permission from local fishers is therefore not required given that permission from spirits is sufficient to access fishing grounds. The migrants already possess the knowledge and skills needed to exploit the most valuable species on the Barren Isles in order to construct an ecological niche (Douglass & Rasolondrainy, 2021). The undomesticated nature of the Barren Isles makes it an open frontier or unenclosed commons.…”
