Social support, perceived risk and the likelihood of COVID-19 testing and vaccination: cross-sectional data from the United Kingdom

Abstract: Two samples of 227 and 214 adults completed surveys of social support, perceived risk of COVID-19 and COVID-19 preventive activity – in Study 1 likelihood of testing was examined and in Study 2 likelihood of both testing and vaccination were examined during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. Path analysis showed, in Study 1, that access to help (as an indicator of social support) had a direct effect on likelihood of testing and indirect effects through self-efficacy, perceived risk and preventive beh… Show more

“…Because social support can provide tangible material support, intangible emotional, and information support to people experiencing pressure or adversity in life, it is considered to be an important influence on PTG, and this has been confirmed by many studies ( Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996 , 2004 ; Tedeschi et al, 2018 ; Zimet et al, 1988 ). Research by Jaspal and Breakwell (2021) showed that social support is an important prerequisite for preventive activities such as risk aversion based on health protection. Perceiving care and social support from others in traumatic life experiences can promote individual altruism and helping behavior ( Harvey & Berndt, 2020 ).…”

“…Based on this measurement approach, we were able to describe specific effects of hypothetical distance, which may be an objective for future studies. This could include for example the role of risk estimation and hypothetical distance, as a higher perceived risk may lead to a smaller hypothetical distance (Jaspal & Breakwell, 2021).…”

“…The identification of variables relevant for preventive behaviors requires the consideration of different sociopsychological and demographic variables. Prior studies in the context of COVID-19 already investigated factors such as social support, media exposure, risk perception, or emotion regulation (Jaspal & Breakwell, 2021;Lin et al, 2020;Rubaltelli et al, 2020). In addition, Marinthe et al (2020) showed that the motivation for protecting oneself may be connected to complying with specific containment measures.…”
