Socialization, Communication, and Role Performance

Abstract: The purpose of this phase of a research project with a government agency was to test the hypothesis of Amitai Etzioni involving socialization, communication, and role performance. The data indicate both socialization and communication are significantly associated with role performance. Communication continues to affect role performance to a significant degree regardless of the degree of initial socialization experienced. These data do not support Etzioni's hypothesis.

“…Role performance is defined (Mulford et al, 1971) as the ac tual behavior of the coordinator that is judged relevant to his job in the building system. There has been a relatively large amount of research on role performance in the building system such as Mulford et al (1970) and Mulford et al (1971). Both studies mentioned above are empirical tests of the Etzioni (1961) model of normative organizations.…”

“…In developing their model on the basis of previous research Mulford et al (1972a: 64-65) is directly affected by the socialization processes which takes place in the organization or as preparation for partici pation therein (Etzioni, 1961: 138). In so doing Mulford et al (1972b) were one of the first researchers to include both socialization and communication in the same theoretical model. A third exogenous variable^ by which an organization ^Exogenous variables are independent only (Lyons, 1971: 151) and are taken as given for the model in that their values are assumed to be determined outside of the model (Blalock, 1968b: 163).…”
