“…Shells are composed of compounds such as calcium carbonate, chitin, calcium hydroxyapatite, and calcium phosphate. Most shells contain chitin which is a natural polysaccharide that has many uses, such as chelating agents, emulsifiers, and adsorbents [11] so that shells can be used as a filtration medium to raise the pH of wastewater. Shell also has a removal value of COD parameter up to 80.6 percent at media thickness of 122 cm and HRT of 36 h [12].…”

“…Besides, the density of GIC and GIC1 samples was observed to increase as the ageing time increased from 1 day to 21 days. The increase in density along with ageing time is due to the increment in ratio of bound to unbound water [ 25 , 28 ]. The reaction in the GIC matrix occurs with the presence of water as a medium of setting reaction over a period of time.…”

“…On the other hand, the carbonate group depicted by C–O vibration mode at wavenumber ~1460 cm −1 confirmed the involvement of carbonate precursors in the production of GIC samples. Besides, Khiri and co-workers explained the formation of asymmetric COOH band at 1550 cm −1 which originated from the carboxyl group in PAA used in the formulation of GIC [ 25 ]. The cross-linking reaction of the carboxylic group was observed in all cement samples due to an active reaction that occurred between PAA and ASF glass ceramics.…”

“…In another sense, the large variability in size and also the static friction coefficient of clam shells on different materials have also been investigated to improve the mechanical processing of clam shells into powders of various granulometries [60]. The flexibility of use and the large availability of clam shells also allowed them to be used as a precursor, together with soda lime glass waste, for the formation of glass ionomer cement, i.e., a mixture of glass and an organic acid, for prospective use in dentistry [61]. Clam shells also possibly represent the most viable source of biogenic calcium carbonate for reasonably easy application in the fields of both polymer and cement composites.…”
