Sodium Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice

Abstract: The phase transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator has been observed in a 23 Na BoseEinstein condensate. A dye laser detuned ≈ 5 nm red of the Na 3 2 S→ 3 2 P 1/2 transition was used to form the three dimensional optical lattice. The heating effects of the small detuning as well as the three-body decay processes constrained the timescale of the experiment. Certain lattice detunings were found to induce a large loss of atoms. These loss features were shown to be due to photoassociation of atoms to vibra… Show more

“…(27), (28) are vectors of the reciprocal lattice determined by the conditions exp (ig j · x l ) = 1. In terms of the primitive vectors of the reciprocal lattice b ν , defined by the identities a ν1 · b ν2 = 2πδ ν1ν2 , g j have the following representation:…”

“…Most of experiments in optical lattices are performed with alkali-metal atoms, mainly with Rb (see, e.g., [3-5, 7, 21-25]) and also with Li [26,27], Na [28,29], K [30], Cs [6,12,31]. In recent years this list was extended and includes also Yb [32], which belongs to the atoms of the alkaline-earth metals, and Cr [33] which is a transition metal.…”

“…The up-conversion step has been demonstrated with near unit efficiency, 293 with the other factors limiting the overall efficiency to 56% to 59% to date. 254,293,321,323 Background count rates are also of concern as the up-conversion process can produce a significant number of unwanted photons. To address this, having the upconversion pump photon at an energy lower than the IR photon to be up-converted rather than the other way around, may prove advantageous in some applications.…”
