Soft, collinear, and nonrelativistic modes in radiative decays of very heavy quarkonium

Abstract: We analyze the end-point region of the photon spectrum in semi-inclusive radiative decays of very heavy quarkonium (m␣ s 2 ӷ⌳ QCD ). We discuss the interplay of the scales arising in the soft-collinear effective theory, m, m(1Ϫz) 1/2 , and m(1Ϫz) for z close to 1, with the scales of heavy quarkonium systems in the weak coupling regime, m, m␣ s , and m␣ s 2 . For 1Ϫzϳ␣ s 2 only collinear and ͑ultra͒soft modes are seen to be relevant, but the recently discovered soft-collinear modes show up for 1ϪzӶ␣ s 2 . The S… Show more

“…They have so far either been ignored [10] or estimated to be small [11] in the available extractions of α s from this ratio. In this paper we take into account recent determinations of the Υ(1S) color octet matrix elements both on the lattice [12] and in the continuum [13], which indicate that their contribution is actually not small. This, together with the good theoretical description of the photon spectrum [9], allows for a consistent extraction of α s (M Υ(1S) ) at NLO in the NRQCD velocity counting.…”

“…In a recent series of papers the differential decay rate for the decay Υ → γX has been studied in the "endpoint" region where the decay products have a large total energy of order the Υ mass (M Υ ), and a small total invariant mass squared of order ΛM Υ , where Λ ∼ 1 GeV is the typical hadronic scale [1,2,3,4,5]. An important tool in this analysis is the softcollinear effective theory (SCET) [6,7,8,9], which is a systematic treatment of the high energy limit of QCD in the framework of effective field theory.…”
