Soft Tissue and Uterine Leiomyosarcoma

Abstract: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is one of the most common subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma in adults and can occur in almost any part of the body. Uterine leiomyosarcoma is the most common subtype of uterine sarcoma. Increased awareness of this unique histology has allowed for the development of drugs that are specific to LMS and has begun to shed light on the similarities and possible unique aspects of soft tissue and uterine LMS. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the epidemiology, diagnosis, geno… Show more

“…Leiomyosarcoma, which occurs in smooth muscle connective tissue, accounts for ten percent of all soft tissue sarcomas. LMS is malignant and exhibits a high degree of invasiveness, high recurrence rate, and high mortality (George et al, 2018). LMS can occur in any location of the body such as in the extremities, small intestine, or retroperitoneal space.…”

“…There are limited data regarding the rarest subtypes. When carcinosarcoma is excluded, LMS is the most common type of uterine sarcoma . uLMS is composed of malignant smooth muscle with significant cellularity, nuclear atypia, necrosis, high mitotic rate, invasion, and metastases.…”
