Soft-X-Ray Therapy in Bowen’s Disease and Erythroplasia of Queyrat

Abstract: The therapeutic results obtained with soft-X-ray irradiation on 77 lesions in 52 patients are reported. 35 males (67.3%) and 17 females (32.7%) were treated. Clinical and aistological features revealed Bowen’s disease in 73 cases (94.8%) and erythroplasia of Queyrat in 4 cases (5.2%). The primary healing was rated as 100% in all cases up to 6 months after a cumulative dosage of 3,200–5,000 R. 2 cases with a genital localization (2.6% of all sites and 11.1% of anogenital localizations) relapsed after 8 and 16 m… Show more

“…95 Complete clearance of SCC in situ has also been reported following soft X-ray in 77 treated lesions, with healing in all cases and relapse in only two patients with genital disease over a mean 3-year follow-up period. 96 In a retrospective review of nine patients with digital SCC in situ, lesions were immersed in a water bath and treated with photon irradiation. The total median radiation dose delivered was 50 Gy (range 25-66 Gy) in 2Á5-Gy fractions (range 2-3 Gy).…”

“…2 Although the best treatment option is surgical excision, many nonsurgical treatments, such as cryotherapy, 3 topical 5-fluororacil, 4 radiotherapy, 5 and laser therapy, 6 have been introduced for patients with poor medical conditions or for lesions with potentially poor wound healing capacity or poor cosmetic outcomes after surgery. However, no single treatment modality has been proven to be superior to any other.…”
