Software-defined energy communication networks: From substation automation to future smart grids

Abstract: Energy communication networks (ECNs) play an integral role in electrical substations. Substations host many Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) that monitor the state of the electricity infrastructure. This critical data is packaged and transmitted between multiple IEDs for proper system monitoring and control. The modern network that interconnects IEDs, while a significant improvement over the historic serial interconnection, has many challenges which have yet to be addressed -ranging from setup complexity … Show more

“…SDN upgrades the hierarchical networking configuration of power system that includes home area networks (HANs), neighbourhood area networks (NANs), and wide-area networks (WANs) through the notion of network operating system (NOS). The use of SDN cloud aware transportation and power system architectures provide alluring solutions to the TOSC network management problem by enabling a software-defined centralized control that is flexible with respect to regular software updates, flow control, security patching, and quality of service (QoS) [31]. The NOS programming interfaces are intelligently programmed to remove the labour, cost and complexities prevalent in traditional network management schemes by updating the network elements from the central control plane [32].…”

“…According to some smart grid researchers [12][13][14][15], communication technologies first need to be further developed, and they predict that software-defined networking (SDN) will allow information exchange in different network platforms, different layers and provide the adaption of new business models of the smart grid without hardware replacement. In addition, they argue that the SDN-based smart grid will improve the system robustness by enhancing the reliability and optimization of the transmission asset utilization [13,15].…”

“…Distributed power grid control nodes are spread in a wide area, but use a proprietary Internet backbone to communicate with each other. Thus, it is feasible to employ SDN technologies to guarantee network delay bounds in a power grid environment [3].…”
