Various fields of manufacturing, management, and business, including technology education, software development, and information communication technology (ICT), have espoused sustainability concepts. Including sustainability concepts in technology, education can help students learn how to implement the dimensions of sustainability (economic, social, and environmental). Lack of awareness and education regarding sustainability among students can impact their competence to incorporate sustainability into technology development. Thus, the development of student competence across the curriculum of technology education for sustainability is crucial. This research aims to explore student competence development in technology education (IT, computer science, and software development) through investigating their awareness of sustainability, and to investigate how much sustainability is infused across the technology education curriculum. The case study for this research is taken from a very populous and developing country—Pakistan. First, an in-depth survey of higher education students is conducted to investigate their awareness level of sustainability. Second, qualitative document analysis is conducted, where the standard curriculum for technology education is taken and analyzed for its provision towards sustainability. A total of 159 students from various public-sector universities of Pakistan reported their awareness towards sustainability. The results show that 71% of them are unaware of the term sustainability in their respective fields, only 17% students know the basic definition of sustainability, and 12% of students have just an idea of how sustainability is related to technology education. It is also observed that the current curriculum of technology education does not sufficiently cover specific subjects or topics that can help students understand the concepts of sustainability. This study highlights the gaps in the offered curriculum for building the desired competence of students in technology education.

Software process and development are the fundamental activities in software engineering. Increasing software usage either develops in-house or outsourcing requires improving the software process accordingly to minimise the adverse effects on the environment. The resources and power consumption controlled by hardware affected the software to move the process that causes high emission of power and energy. Thus, most of the existing work on software development is aimed at the efficiency of hardware operation through CPU, memory, and processor. Although sustainability is still initial in software engineering, the green software process can be achieved through sustainable development that concerns the preservation of the environment. However, there is still a lack of study and effort in the software process that emphasises sustainability perspectives and software waste elimination. Therefore, this study proposes the green factors for the software process that consider the sustainability elements and waste reduction during development. The green factors are the benchmark to measure a sustainable and green software process. Besides, this paper also presents the qualitative interview design and pilot study. The pilot study analysis has demonstrated the reliability of the interview protocol. Therefore, the actual interview and data analysis are currently in progress.

Sustainability of Systematic Literature Reviews

Context: Systematic Literature Review (SLR) has been increasingly adopted in Software Engineering (SE) because it is considered the most reliable way to gather evidence from the literature. At the same time, SLR currently consumes much time and effort to be conducted, and its results have not impacted the software industry as expected. Despite several solutions proposed to solve the problems of SLR, the research remains very fragmented failing to provide a bigger picture of the problems and associated solutions. Objective: This study introduces the concept of sustainability in SLRs to the SE community as a holistic view of the current research scenario putting together a solid knowledge base that includes definitions, guidelines, and the main leveraging points of sustainability in current SLR conducted in SE. Method: After conducting a tertiary study investigating the main characteristics of sustainability of software systems, we applied the meta-ethnographic method to transpose sustainability characteristics into SLR context by identifying, adapting, synthesizing, and validating those which could aid researchers in conducting more useful studies with less effort. Finally, we extracted a sample of high-quality studies conducted in the SE area, next, we applied a sustainability view to identify the flaws that lead to unsustainable SLR. Results: Our study provides an overview of the role of sustainability in the SLR context and provides important assets for SE community to identify what are sustainable SLR, such as 15 characteristics of sustainable SLR and 15 sensitive points of SLR process that are considered critical factors to achieve sustainability. In addition, we propose 16 guidelines to support researchers to improve sustainability in their SLR and identified 13 leveraging points found in relevant studies in SE area that together represent actions that should be adopted immediately to enhance the sustainability of SLR. Conclusion: Our work represents a starting point for a mindset shift in the SE community about the importance of creating more sustainable reviews. Furthermore, we believe that sustainability is the missing key concept that could connect many advances achieved over the years of research and remove barriers that hinder SLR from providing useful information in a timely manner for academia and industry. Henceforth, we believe that researchers should observe sustainability as a first-class citizen while conducting/updating SLR to make them compatible with the sustainability view.
