Is there any relationship between plant nutrition and human health? The overall response to this question is very positive, and a strong relationship between the nutrition of plants and humans has been reported in the literature. The nutritional status of edible plants consumed by humans can have a negative or positive impact on human health. This review was designed to assess the importance of plant bioactive compounds for human health under the umbrella of sustainable agriculture. With respect to the first research question, it was found that plant bioactives (e.g., alkaloids, carotenoids, flavonoids, phenolics, and terpenoids) have a crucial role in human health due to their therapeutic benefits, and their potentiality depends on several factors, including botanical, environmental, and clinical attributes. Plant bioactives could be produced using plant tissue culture tools (as a kind of agro-biotechnological method), especially in cases of underexploited or endangered plants. Bioactive production of plants depends on many factors, especially climate change (heat stress, drought, UV radiation, ozone, and elevated CO2), environmental pollution, and problematic soils (degraded, saline/alkaline, waterlogged, etc.). Under the previously mentioned stresses, in reviewing the literature, a positive or negative association was found depending on the kinds of stress or bioactives and their attributes. The observed correlation between plant bioactives and stress (or growth factors) might explain the importance of these bioactives for human health. Their accumulation in stressed plants can increase their tolerance to stress and their therapeutic roles. The results of this study are in keeping with previous observational studies, which confirmed that the human nutrition might start from edible plants and their bioactive contents, which are consumed by humans. This review is the first report that analyzes this previously observed relationship using pictorial presentation.

Humic Acids Enhance Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) Phytoextraction from a Contaminated Soil by Basil Plants

Elevated levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soil possess a potential threat to human health. Probably, the use of hyper-accumulator plants can be an eco-friendly and cheap approach to attain more desirable levels of these contaminants in soil. The current study is a trial to increase the efficiency of basil (hyperaccumulator) plants to phytoextract some PTEs, namely Cd, Pb and Co froma clay soil artificially contaminated with these PTEsby the aid of elevated doses of humic acids (HAs 0-50mg kg -1 ) derived from a mature compost. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in 2021to attain this aim and lasted for 60 days, following a complete randomized design. During this investigation, soil moisture was kept gravimetrically ataround 70% of water holding capacityto avoid the leach out of soluble metal ions or organic complexes from the soil. By the end of this experiment, plants were harvested and the results indicated significant reductions in root and shoot dry weights and their lengths owing to the application of humic acids at a rate of 20mg kg -1 versus the control (0 mg HAs kg -1 ). Increasing the dose of HAs application (up to 50mg kg -1 ) led to concurrent significant increases in the abovementioned growth parameters; yet, their values were still below the control plants. Likewise, significant increases were noticeable for PTEs contents within roots and shoots of plants treated with 20mg HAs kg -1 while increasing the dose of HAs application resulted in significant reductions in their contents versus the lower application dose of HAs. Root-to-shoot translocation factor was >1 for each of Cd and Co, while the corresponding values for Pb were less than one. Unfortunately, all BAF values were below one and this result indicates that basil plants cannot be considered hyperaccumulators for Cd and Co but can be used for successful facilitated phytoextraction of these two contaminants from soil. In conclusion, humic acids although enhanced phytoextraction of the PTEs under study by basil plants,yet they cannot beconsidered the optimum chelating agent that could facilitate the phytoextraction of soil contaminants under conditions of the soil under study.

NVIRONMENTAL pollution is a great modern challenge. This pollution is generated from different sources and reaches a variety of environmental compartments including soil, water, plants, air, animals, and humans. Among sources of pollution, nanopollution has become an emerging global issue. Nanopollution is a result of the intensive processing and use of nanomaterials and/or nanoparticles in the soil, water, plant, air, and food chain systems. Ultimately, nanopollutants may reach humans and influence their health. Health problems reported after human exposure to nanopollutants include toxicity to the kidney, brain, spleen, and heart. Approaches to remediate soil nanopollution will be discussed in this review, which focuses on soil nanopollution in the frame of soil-human health nexus (SHHN). A close relationship between soil nanopollution and the SHHN has been confirmed by several studies. This interaction depends on several factors related to the pollutants, their concertation, and agro-environmental conditions. The interaction between soil nanopollutants and human health is of great concern and needs more study.
