Plateau areas have been considered with high land-use capacity in the Brazilian Meridional Plateau Edge of South Brazil. These areas belong Atlantic Forest biome, the second most extinction threatened ecoregion in the world, and weak knowledge about the environment leads to intensive use and degradation. We aimed to identify soil fragility and land-use capacity and limitation of the Brazilian Meridional Plateau Edge, in South Brazil, by the soil properties. Soil morphology, steady-state water infiltration, and physical and chemical properties at 0.00-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m layers were evaluated at 57 sampling points in a grid of 20 x 20 m. Although under a small elevation slope, these areas have high soils and their properties variability, which implies high natural fragility. Unlike the soils and properties expected by farmers and scientists, naturally fragile soils (Leptosols, Regosols) with only patches of developed soils (Cambisols, Alisols, Planosols/Gleysols) predominate in these areas. The proper land-use and management of the soil and its landscapes depend on a detailed knowledge of the soil. Because, considering only the expected soil and environment capacity without the evaluation obtained with this study, the soils were intensively used and degraded.

CIÊNCIAS FLORESTAIS (FOREST SCIENCES) RESUMO: Os objetivos deste trabalho foram analisar as variáveis pedológicas e topográficas de dois fragmentos florestais em diferentes estágios de regeneração e verificar a relação destas com a estrutura fisionômica e comunitária da vegetação. O estudo foi desenvolvido no Rebordo do Planalto do Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Foram estabelecidas, pelo método de amostragem sistemática, 23 parcelas de 10 x 20 m (0,46 ha) em um fragmento de floresta secundária (FS) e 9 parcelas (0,18 ha) em um fragmento de capoeira (CA), totalizando 0,64 ha. Foi utilizado o levantamento da vegetação e mensuradas variáveis pedológicas e topográficas. As variáveis foram selecionadas por Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP), separadas em grupos por análise de agrupamento (AA) e comparados em relação às variáveis fitossociológicas através da análise de correspondência canônica (ACC). A maior riqueza de espécies foi identificada nos solos com maior qualidade nutritiva, em que as variáveis com maior influência na distribuição das espécies foram: profundidade, areia, pH e índice de vermelho (IV). Ao contrário, na CA, a maior riqueza de espécies foi associada aos solos mais ácidos e pobres em nutrientes em que as variáveis silte, altitude e IV apresentaram maior influência na distribuição das espécies. Estes resultados destacam a importância das espécies pioneiras nesse estágio de regeneração florestal.

Leaf-Level Field Spectroscopy to Discriminate Invasive Species (Psidium guajava L. and Hovenia dulcis Thunb.) from Native Tree Species in the Southern Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Invasive species are known to have potential advantages over the native community and can be expressed in their leaf functional traits. Thus, leaf-level traits with spectral reflectance can provide valuable insights for distinguishing invasive trees from native trees in complex forest environments. We conducted field spectroscopy measurements in a subtropical area, where we also collected trait data for 12 functional traits of invasive (Psidium guajava and Hovenia dulcis), and native species (Psidium cattleianum and Luehea divaricata). We found that photosynthetic pigments were responsible for the greatest interspecific variability, especially in the green region of the spectrum at 550 nm, therefore contributing to detection of invasive species. In addition, according to LDA and stepwise procedures, the most informative reflectance spectra were concentrated in the visible range that is closely related to pigment absorption features. Furthermore, we aimed to understand the leaf optical properties of the target invasive species by using a combination of narrow bands and linear regression models. P. guajava showed high correlations with specific leaf area, Car/Chl and relative water content. H. dulcis had a strong correlation with water content, specific leaf area and Chla/Chlb. Overall, this methodology proved to be appropriate for discriminating invasive trees, although parameterization by species is necessary.
