Soil mineral N dynamics beneath mixtures of leaves from legume and fruit trees in Central Amazonian multi-strata agroforests

Abstract: Long term applications of leguminous green mulch could increase mineralizable nitrogen (n) beneath cupuaçu trees produced on the infertile acidic Ultisols and Oxisols of the amazon Basin. however, low quality standing cupuaçu litter could interfere with green mulch n release and soil n mineralization. This study compared mineral n, total n, and microbial biomass n beneath cupuaçu trees grown in two different agroforestry systems, north of Manaus, Brazil, following seven years of different green mulch applicati… Show more

“…The input of new N would trigger several weathering-related mechanisms (figure 2d). First, the low C/N ratio of N 2 -fixing legume litter implies fast decomposition, greater microbial respiration and greater CO 2 production than non-legume litter [40,41]. During decomposition, the majority of N-rich leaf tissue and its amino acids, amino sugars and other N-rich monomers will undergo ammonification and nitrification.…”

“…Rangel et al (2011) also emphasize that proper cutting of Gliricidia is important to the sustainability of the crop. Additionally, Gliricidia can be used to incorporate nitrogen into the soil (Schwendener et al, 2007) and acts as a biological control agent for certain pests (Sivira et al, 2011). According to Cirne et al (2012), this species performs well when fed to feedlot sheep.…”

“…Comumente, a pouca disponibilidade de N no solo, associada à grande demanda pelas plantas, fazem desse nutriente um dos mais limitantes ao crescimento e desenvolvimento das plantas. O N mineral no solo, representado predominantemente pelas formas amônio (NH 4 + ) e nitrato (NO 3 -), resulta de muitas transformações do N orgânico, as quais são influenciadas por diferentes fatores ambientais (Gama-Rodrigues et al 2005;Schwendener et al 2007;Camargo et al 2008).…”
